i-EM is setting new standards with the use of space resources! Recently featured on the official ESA website and acknowledged in their prestigious Energy Dossier, which explores the crucial role of space in the global energy transition. Our advanced system for managing microgrids in India, showcased in the MOWGLI project, is not just a benchmark but a guiding light for the evolution of energy communities. This innovative initiative introduces a sophisticated system for microgrid management across India, setting a new standard for efficiency and reliability in energy communities worldwide.
Empowering Energy Communities with Space Insights
Today’s world is moving towards the use of diverse energy sources, accelerating the adoption of innovative energy solutions, and modernizing the infrastructure of the energy industry. Space applications are crucial in this phase, contributing to the advancement and digitalization of the sector in all stages of the energy cycle, from generation and storage to operations and decommissioning. This comprehensive approach not only boosts efficiency but also fosters sustainable growth in urban and rural settings alike.
Satellite-Based Solution for Optimal Microgrid Management
MOWGLI is a satellite-based solution that offers a range of services for optimal planning, design, operations, and maintenance of microgrids in urban and rural areas of developing countries. The solution supports customization and sizing of microgrid components based on electricity demand and the availability of renewable energies. It also provides monitoring, load balancing, disaster recovery, and smart services.
How does the Mowgli project work?
This project offers two main services that utilize a range of satellite data combined with artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics to develop digitized systems for rural microgrid services aimed at managing the entire energy ecosystem: MOWGLI Tailor and MOWGLI Manager.
The system involves the use of various renewable energy sources such as wind turbines, solar energy, mini-hydro systems, or energy storage systems. By considering the local availability of energy sources and analysing this data in real-time, the system can provide assessments of renewable energy and estimate consumption needs that inform the sustainability, scalability, and stability of microgrids in the early design stages.
MOWGLI TAILOR uses Earth observation imagery to optimize the sizing and design phases of microgrid structures in India.
MOWGLI MANAGER uses real-time monitoring to forecast generation and consumption levels and record network activities. Data analysis also enables managers to detect potential component failures early, which can then be promptly addressed to extend their operational life and save time and money.
ESA’s Consideration of the Project
Crucially, ESA’s recognition highlights the transformative impact of i-EM’s approach. By integrating satellite-based insights into the MOWGLI project, i-EM has not only improved microgrid design processes by up to 70% but has also significantly reduced operational costs by an impressive 15%. This collaboration not only validates i-EM’s innovative efforts but also solidifies its position as a leader in leveraging space technology for sustainable energy solutions.
